Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple)

Overview

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Kathmandu Valley, Swayambhunath is one of Nepal’s oldest and most sacred Buddhist stupas. According to legend, the stupa marks the spot where a lotus flower bloomed when the valley was once a great lake.

The gleaming white dome and golden spire are adorned with the iconic all-seeing eyes of Buddha, symbolizing wisdom and compassion. Visitors climb a long staircase lined with prayer flags, spinning prayer wheels while enjoying spectacular panoramic views of Kathmandu.
